Coronapedia - Gluon Disruptor

Some scientist whose name is lost to antiquity, had a moment of whimsey and called the force that binds atoms and molocules together gluons (glue-ons). The manipulation of these forces allows for all kinds of applications from molecular bonding to protien modulation.

This mechanism is the sledghammer to the micrometer of those other technologies. It does one thing and one thing only, break down the bonds that hold matter together. It will cut anything made of ordinary matter, though it requires some finesse to not break the material down completely; the tougher, thicker or more complex the material, the longer it takes to safely cut. As you might expect, this process takes an awful lot of power so it is limited to industrial or emergency rescue functions, which is probably just as well. The uncontrolled disruptor effect will kill any living thing in the vicinity. Gluon disruptors are normally only used by trained personel under very exacting safety perameters.

Though there is always some talk of using this technology for weapons, the fact that it is an all or nothing effect prevents it from being viable for that use. There is also the fact that existing energy weapons are far more efficient at causing death and destruction than a gluon disruptor.
