Coronapedia - Molecular Bonding

Among the technologies available to most races in Corona Galaxy is molecular bonding. This replaces welding, bolting and other more primitive forms of adhesion and joining to allow near-perfect seals and connections between sometimes widely different types of material. It also allows the combining of different substances to utilize features of both. The bonding of silicon, iron and titanium atoms makes glassteel, a clear material that is tougher than even the strongest normal glass or plastics. Plasteel combines the best features of plastics (lightweight, tough) and titanium (tougher yet and lighter than iron) into a material that is used for survival suits, combat armor and various kinds of small vehicles. Bonding technology is also used to harness the highly unstable substances of jovium and solium, which are used to, respectively, build and propel spacecraft.

A variation on this technology is used in medical applications in place of staples or sutures. The bonding of bone, skin, flesh and even organs allows more rapid healing from transplants, injuries or illness. Many diseases can be cured by use of this technology including most viral or germ infections and cancerous tumors. The offending cells are broken down into neutral substances which are processed out by the body, though full recovery may still take time: damage already done to the system may have to heal naturally.

The manipulation of molecular bonds allows for a number of other technologies such as food replication (See: Protien Modulator) or applications in construction and demolition (See: Gluon Disruptor).
